Me and GP

I got a chance to go up against Gary Payton in this Nov. 28 game. (Getty Images)
On Monday, Nov. 28, we got to go to Miami to play against the Miami Heat. Like the game against the 76ers, this was also a thrill for me because I got to play against Gary Payton.
I’ve known GP for a long time. My Dad knows his whole family. In fact, I used to play for his team.
When he played for the Sonics, he used to sponsor our AAU team, the Gary Payton All-Stars. I was a sophomore at Rainier Beach High School in Seattle at the time, 16 years old. He brought us to his house and everything. And we got to see his nice house in Vegas and he got us all some shoes and clothes and stuff. And now playing against him in the NBA was just crazy.
He talked to me a little during the game. He’s a cool dude. I told him I liked his shoes he had on. He brought back the old GPs. He didn’t talk any trash to me, not really. He just said “Welcome to the NBA.”
I also got my first NBA dunk in that game. It was cool I got it, but we didn’t win the game, so I didn’t care that much. If we would have won, it would’ve been sweeter.

What's up Nate?
Please, please, please enter the SLAM DUNK CONTEST this year. It has been lacking in substance over the last few years. Keep doing your thing out there on the court. You are the primary reason that I watch Knicks games.

Nate I am so happy now that you play professionally for the NYK's.
You have offically become my favorite knick.
Keep listening to LB

Is there a part of you that still wishes you were playing for the U-Dub? "Just a little" part that would like to see how you could have been a part taking the team to the Final and winning it all? The Huskies are very good this year but what an amazing team it would have been with you and Webster all playing together for ONE YEAR!!!! Martell seems to be "lost" hanging on the bench when he could have been a freshman starter for the Huskies......and you showing the youngters what it is all about!!!! Your thoughts?

hey Nate, dont know to much about you. Just know that you play for one of the greatest teams in the history of the NBA. Which to me, means you have heart. You have to have heart in order to represent NYC and the whole State of NY. I wish you well and hope you can contribute in bringing NY a championship.

Hey Nate,
You were a big joy to watch while in Seattle. I'll always remember when you found out the band's hand signal for "Johnny Q", and we ended up singing it on the plane from Albuquerque and watching you dance in the plane's aisle. Take care, and we'll see you back in Seattle!

Hey N8! great blog, I'm the biggest Knick fan ever, well the greatest (female under the age of 15) Knick fan ever and want to tell you how grateful I am for your play here. You have provided us fans with some amazing entertainment but most importantly much valuable PT and pivotal plays, we wouldn't have gotten any of those 5 wins w/ out you! Good luck in motown!

Nate,
Will miss you in the bank this year but we are all excited to see you have success with the Knicks. Having seen you play for Rainier Beach and the Dawgs there was no question in my mind you will succeed. Best of luck for the season and Go Dawgs!

Nate,
I am a huge basketball fan in that lives in Denver. Im a fan of the game not any specific team. But I am sick of everyone that likes Earl Boykins. He holds on to the ball way to long and I think hurts Denver's offence. While I love his heart and determination he must be a playmaker. Please shut him down when you play the Nugg's and make every shut their mouth about how good he is.

Nate I remember seeing you score 43 points in the state semis for Beach and knew you could make the pros. They better put you in the slam dunk contest, you would win it easily.

Hi Nate, my name is michael fitzpatrick i am 11 years old and i love the game of basketball. It is very inspireing what your doing and i hope you do good in the NBA.

Nate, thanks for missing that final 3 against my boys, the Celtics. I thought it was going in for sure. You are fun to watch and I wish you many great games, so long as they don't come @ the expense of the C's..

Hi Nate
You are a great basketball player and you are cute and tell Trevor Ariza that I love him.

Dear Nate,
I have been a huge fan of the Knicks since the 94 Finals with Pat Ewing and John Starks. I very pleased to say that your presence along with the other rookies (Channing and David) have given us die-hard Knicks fans something to cheer about! Although I am a native of Toronto I can't wait to make a trip down to NYC to check you guys out @ the Garden. Keep playing hard and I wish you the best of luck on your career.
P.S. Nice shot on A.I. your game reminds of John Starks back in the day. Everyone doubted his game but look where that cat went. Peace!
Jason Yuen (Sent Dec 5, 2005 9:36:12 PM)
I am a die hard Knick fan and you play like you're 7 feet tall. You play with a lot of heart and I like the energy that you bring to the game.
CWilliams, Jersey City, NJ (Sent Dec 6, 2005 12:22:14 AM)
hey nate, it was awesome seein you at udub last year. why don't you tell the sports announcers to give your correct height, which is around 5'6". i've seen you in person and you are eye to eye with me, no way you are 5'9", not to take away from your game cause you play like your 6'"6.
eddie lee, seattle, wa (Sent Dec 6, 2005 1:56:18 AM)
yo nate im a student at boston university and i saw you in your first nba game at the fleetcenter in boston. I was standing about 6 feet from you during shootout and of the 30 or 35 shots i saw you put up you hit like 90% of those shots. Im a huge knick fan from ny and would just like to wish you the best of luck for the rest of the season.
A Sharma, New York, NY (Sent Dec 6, 2005 3:59:15 PM)
Nate,
As a NY fan, I was thrilled when the Knicks drafted you. You played with more heart than anyone in the NCAA last year and you are already showing that competitive nature. I haven't owned a Knick jersey in years, but I just ordered a number 4 with "The Great" on the back. Keep up the hustle, and thanks for giving us something to cheer about!
Cadillac Williams (Sent Dec 7, 2005 11:51:19 AM)
It is such great fun watching the Knicks, despite the abysmal start (although tonight's 20 point loss to the Bucks despite 30 from Channing and 50%+ shooting was hard to watch). You have quickly become the heart of the team. When you went down very hard in the paint tonight Larry Brown's warmth toward you was hard to miss. The Knicks now have some building blocks to work with and you are one of them! I hope coach can settle on a rotation and you can all start gellin and put a run together; I am not ready to throw in the towel on this season and am excited about the years to come.
This blog is great! I enjoyed scrolling through the comments of others. You are an improbable sensation! People seem to really like you - your competitiveness and heart and what is getting noticed - plus your height which is of course quite rare. But I think there is more to it and this blog gets at that. Keep it up. I noticed the bidding for your jersey in a post game charity event was 3X higher than any other item.
