Kobe, not Dirk, should be MVP
Posted: Tuesday, May 1 at 08:58 pm ET by Nate Robinson
It’s time to make my picks for NBA awards, so let’s get right to it.
There has been a lot of buzz about Dirk Nowitzki for MVP this season, but I would have to go with Kobe Bryant. He’s had an unbelievable season, scoring at least 50 points 10 times! The Lakers have had a lot of injury problems, but they still made the playoffs, and it's all because of Kobe.
I think Steve Nash has had a great year and I think it would be cool if he won it for a third straight year, but I think Kobe should be the pick.
For Rookie of the Year, that’s easy. I think Brandon Roy will win it, and he is very deserving. He had the best season of any rookie, and he was also in the best situation out there in Portland. It just shows you what the guys from Seattle and the UW can do.
I’ve known Brandon since the 10th grade, so that’s great. He’s representing the 206.
For Most Improved, it came down to two players for me –- Monta Ellis of Golden State, who is a friend of mine, and my own teammate David Lee. Ellis won the award, and I am happy for him.
But personally, I would have given it to David. I’ve seen his potential since watching him in college. He has a great nose for the ball and plays so hard. He’s also a great free throw shooter.

Things looking up for Knicks
ok now i been watching, playing and learning basketball for about 30 years and how can u give nash MVP when he has all-stars on his team and run up and down and its not hard to score when ur on a fastbreak; u see how they lost to spurs and will lose series because they cant play halfcourt ball and u give him mvp..... dirk yea team had best record but so wat, he has all-stars on his team... now kobe he does everything he can with his team. he scores 60 and they win kobe still did somthing wrong in the hates mind, hes scores 60 and lose he's a ballhog. so wat ever he does they dont like him... and those writers are all stupid 2005 nash gets mvp when shaq should of,2006 nash gets it when kobe/lebron.. so this year he should not win cuz he should not be a class of MJ and bird so damn those writes if he gets it again... so kobe should be mvp but writers are too stupid to see wat he means to him team.. kobe mvp

Kobe for MVP. I THINK IT`S EASY TO MAKE Assists TO AMARE OR BELL AND BARBOSA. IMAGINE TO JASON KIDD IN THE SUNS, HE ALSO COULD MAKE MORE THAN 12 ASSISTS PER GAME.SO THE TEAM MAKE NASH A GREAT PLAYER. IT IS DIFFICULT TO IMAGINE STEVE LEADING THE LAKERS TO PLAYOFFS, ICANT IMAGINE A PICK AND ROLL WHIT COOK OR TURIAF?

It amazes me how so many people hate on Kobe!!! Will you guys just give him a break. He's by far the best player in the league on the worst team of the leauge. Don't get me wrong Nash is great but he's surrounded with all star talent, so is Dirk. Im gonna sound like a broken record here but put Nash or Dirk in the Lakers and I can promise you they wont get to the playoff's. The MVP represents the most valuable player to it's team and clearly Kobe was that for his team carrying them on his shoulders night in and night out. Respect the man for what he's done for the game too, there's nobody out there that can even come close to what Kobe does. He's a beast offensively and defensively.

I would just like to say that Kobe deserves to be the MVP. First of all Steve Nash has to do no work because he has other stars around him to carry the load, Kobe does not. Second, the only reason that people keep hollering for Dirk is because he shoots the long three, but in truth he is too sorry to play the post where a 7 footer should be. Third, Kobe is the Lakers, point blank. Without him they are nothing. If everyone knows that he is the greatest basketball player in the world then why are we even discussing anyone else being the MVP? And lastly everyone needs to stop hating on Kobe. He is not arrogant. He is only confident in his abilites, which he should be. His personal life has nothing to do with his undeniable talent. And if all you haters missed it he was not guilty. Kobe is the only player that can ever be considered in the same league as Michael Jordan. If other NBA players all agree that he is the best then WHY WHY can't my favorite player get that MVP trophy he so rightly deserves?

KOBE IS THE GREATEST PLAYER TO EVER PLAY THE GAME,HE DESERVES THE MVP BECAUSE HE TOOK THE LAKERS ALL THE WAY TO THE FINALS BY HIMSELF,HE IS ONE OF THE BEST CLUTCH SHOOTERS IN THE N.B.A

For my choice as MVP for this year, the award should be given to KOBE.He did a lot of things for the team (Lakers),averaged 32 ppg during the season, scored 50 or more points for 4 consecutive times.IT IS BECAUSE OF KOBE that the Lakers became the 7th seed in the west!If only Kobe had players around him like what Nash and Dirk has,the 4th championship ring might just be in sight. If you put Nash or Dirk in the same role as Kobe for the team,i don't think they will accomplish the same feat as Kobe (with all the injuries, controversies and "trust issues" with regards to the players that the lakers had this season).Kobe single-handedly carried the lakers after Shaq left. For this season,I think Lamar also deserves credit for not giving up on his team despite all the injuries he had especially during the later part of the season. For the Lakers organization, I just hope you can come up with the RIGHT decisions during the off-season.MVP?K-O-B-E!!

Nate, as usual you are WRONG again. There is no way Kobe is the MVP. Greatest individual performer of the year MAYBE, but MVP no way. An intellectual review of the season would show that NASH IS THE MVP, whether he gets the award or not. Kobe will never legitimately win the MVP until he acts like an MVP not an all-star solo act. Nate, you are better off choosing the best fight instigator not the MVP. You should stick with what you are good at and that is being irritating, bench warming and fight prevoking.

Its amazing to me the number of people who get caught up in Kobe's game, which they seem to only learn through the HATERS. You want to call Kobe selfish, then you can not explain how he averaged more assists AND POINTS per game than Dirk, and DIRK plays on a team with at least 2 players who are better than all of the Lakers except Kobe. People continue to call Kobe selfish, yet he averaged almost 5 assist per game (Dirk roughly 3) and he played on a team with players who generally hit less than 40% of their shots from the field. MEANING he would have had more assists if his teammates could hit their shots. KOBE for MVP or NASH for MVP - with NASH being the favorite and DIRK given the shaft.

There should be a set rule(s) as to exactly what an "MVP" is. If scoring, assists, rebounds etc all factor in, then team wins, power level of teamates, power of schedule it may be easier to pick, otherwise its like the BCS, an argument waiting to happen.
Most people pick players on their own likes/dislikes. But I think we should let the players have a vote in it and the coach's plus the fans. Otherwise its just a popularity contest like the all-star balloting.

Here is a simple fact. The NBA MVP trophy is so over-rated. It means absolutly nothing!!!!!It is not voted on by nba coaches, nba gms, or nba players. It is the Media that votes for the MVP. So it really means ZERO. Give it to NASH or NOWITSKI, who cares!!!!The value of this trophy is a joke. If Nash makes his teammates that much better; Where is the Championship?...Heck, Where is the finals appearance?...NASH, greatest pg of all-time, HELL NO!!...Magic was the greatest PG of all time!!!! 5 titles, 8 finals apperances!!!!Shoot Nash probably doesn't crack the top 3 of alltime...1.Magic, 2.Bob Cousy, 3. John Stockton

hahahaha. Steve Nash for MVP? Dirk for MVP? thats the funniest joke i've heard all year. Kobe is clearly has been MVP for the past two seasons. I mean c'mon did you honestly think the lakers were going to make the playoffs last season? or even this season when they were on those 7 and 6 game losing streaks? Kobe knew that it was what i call "kobe time" (crunch time). He impressed everyone when he hit 50 or more for 4 games in a row. I mean c'mon even MJ couldn't do it! It's time to wake up and be 4real cause Kobe's the MVP!!!! And in my opinion the greatest to ever play the game along with MJ.
Hassan Bryant (Sent May 8, 2007 5:52:00 PM)
I find it funny the way people try tp downplay the contribution of Kobe to LA and basketball in general. There is this group of people who think the only deserving candidate for MVP should be the one whose team has the best record. I on the other hand think that the MVP should also be given based on the materials you have, and the circumstances around you. In terms of quality of material Kobe had the least among the three, and the fact that there were too many injuries during the season should be a factor. Even with the least material, Kobe and the guys were playing well before being hit with injuries. Could Nash and Dirk being more valuable if they had being called on to help their teams when they got to the stage lakers found themselves. The MVP should be the one who can adapt his game to the team's circunstances, whether scoring 50 or 30 when the need be.

You said "Who won the championship after shaq left? Not Kobe!!...well guess what...nash's team didnt win a title either...ok...soo u cant b talkin!!...lakers without kobe would definetly be a lottery team..that is y he is soo "VALUABLE"..If his teamates made shots, Kobe would hav about 10 assists per game...PHX wins games cuz of nash. amare, marion, and barbosa...not jus nash alone..

LET ME EDUCATE YOU FOLKS, WHEN IS THE LAST TIME A TEAM WON THE TITLE WHEN THE PLAYER WHO TAKES THE MOST SHOTS ON THEIR TEAM SHOOTS 43%, AS KOBE HAS IN HIS PLAYOFF CAREER? I DON'T KNOW THE ANSWER BUT I'M SURE ITS BEEN A LONG TIME. TALENT DOES NOT EQUATE TO MVP OR THE BEST "PLAYER". YOU HAVE TO PERFORM WHEN IT COUNTS, NOT BE A CHOKING DOG LIKE KOBE HAS BEEN IN THE FINALS 3 OUT OF 4 YEARS. KOBE IS A TEAM KILLER, EVER SINCE HE TRIED TO BE "THE MAN" IN THE FINALS VS THE PISTONS. HE TOOK 8 MORE SHOTS PER GAME THAN SHAQ AND SHOT 38%. LUKE WALTON LED THE TEAM IN ASSISTS THAT SERIES DESPITE PLAYING ONLY 19 MINUTES A GAME!! WAKE UP!! IT TAKES MORE THAN TALENT!! STOP BLAMING KOBE'S TEAMMATES, HE SHOULD MAKE THEM BETTER. THERE ARE SEVERAL GUYS ON HE LAKERS THAT ARE BETTER 3-POINT SHOOTERS THAN KOBE. JORDAN SHOT 50% EVEN BEFORE THE BULLS WERE WINNING TITLES. HE DIDN'T HURT HIS TEAM WITH POOR SHOOTING. HE ALWAYS PLAYED WELL, THATS WHAT TRULY GREAT PLAYERS DO MORE OFTEN THAN NOT. KOBE SHOULD USE HIS GREAT SKILLS AND CREATE MORE FOR HIS TEAMMATES. HE IS AN OVERGROWN IVERSON, A STREAK SHOOTER WHO IS MORE OFTEN THAN NOT MISSING(SEE GAME 5 AND ALMOST ANY 4TH QTR, EVERY YEAR HE IS NEAR THE BOTTOM). YOU GUYS ARE THE SAME PEOPLE WHO WILL GIVE HIM ALL OF THE CREDIT IF THEY PLAY WELL, THEN HE NEEDS TO TAKE THE BLAME ALSO. ITS HIS TEAM, HE GOT WHAT HE WANTED SO BUTCH UP!!
JIM (Sent May 9, 2007 10:07:11 AM)
Hey Tom Jones,
Maybe Kobe should focus on making his teammates better instead of jacking up so many shots a game. Individually he's probably the best one-on-one offensive player in the league, but he doesn't make his teammates better, and until he finds a way to do that he probably won't win an MVP award. The sad thing is he has the tools to do so. There is usually at least one point in the game when he throws some crazy no-look pass to someone for an easy basket. Why he doesn't do that more, I'll never know, especially when he draws multiple defenders. His shot selection drives me crazy sometimes! More team play from Kobe, and he's an MVP no doubt. Here's to hoping he does.
Roy James, Calagary, Alberta (Sent May 9, 2007 1:46:18 PM)
If you put Kobe on the Suns, lets face it, no one else would be an all-star because Kobe would still jack up 40 shots a game. Not enough ball to go around with him on your team. Nash doesn't make his teammates better? What about their big turnaround when he joined the team? What about all the career high numbers for his teammates? Kobe is the best player, but not the MVP.
Gregory Morrison (Sent May 9, 2007 1:56:48 PM)
I think a lot of you forget the concept of what MVP is. Without Nash, yes the Suns would still be a good team but the intangibles are the reason he is bringing the MVP home again. He leads his team night in and night out. The Suns rely on his pin point passing, up tempo pace, and leadership. I agree that Kobe is the best player but most vaulable to his team I don't know about that. If they switched yes kobe would do well but do you honestly think that he would be asked to carry the load on that deep of a team. More like they would ask him to play more defense. And do you honestly think that he would fit in with other superstars. We all seen how that worked out last time lol. Whereas, if nash went to lakers guess what he would bring more of a calming effect. Yes he would have to put them on his shoulders but that is what an MVP does
Reed, Phoenix (Sent May 9, 2007 2:05:36 PM)
Gotta love the people who obviously have no clue about the game of basketball talk about the greatest player since MJ. I think Barkley hit it on the head when he said " Kobe aint MJ, but he is the closest thing we have seen since" The lakers would be a lottery team with Nash at the helm cause they cant shoot and Dirk is a proven choker in big games. Who would you start a team around if you were building today? Any answer other than Kobe is foolish. He can defend, take it to the hoop, hit 3's, break ankles and make foul shots....what cant he do? Its a crock that he doesnt win MVP....Nash has never even been to the stinking finals, how is that valuable? Nash leaves dallas and they get better....yeah, real valuable.
FrankyP (Sent May 9, 2007 4:03:23 PM)
Nash has a bunch of all-stars to play with? Come on... the Suns are 4-11 without Nash due to injury in the last three seasons. I can guarantee you that the Lakers would be a top three team in the league if they traded Kobe for Nash. I love Nash for bringing team basketball back to the NBA! Kobe should enter the high jump at the olympics or something.
Anthony (Sent May 9, 2007 4:04:28 PM)
All the kobe haters suck, can't they just admit kobe is one of the best players in the game, if not ever
he has been very valuable and a great player since he came to the NBA...............So stop hating

after reading all of these posts I've come to the conclusion that anyone who knows ANYTHING about the game of basketball is all in agreement that Kobe is the REAL MVP no matter who gets the trophy but heres a reality check for all you trash talking suns fans 1)the only time Raja "cheapshot" Bell ever stopped KB from scoring is when he closelined him and 2)Nash might have 2 MVP awards but how many rings does he have cuz KB has 3 which coincidentally is 3 more than the whole suns franchise :) not bad for a ballhog huh??? lets be real about this whole thing Kobe is not a pretty boy like Nash and because of all of the bad media hes gotten hell probably never get the MVP but before its all said and done he WILL have some more rings and that speaks louder than the mvp anyways lets not forget what the game is all about CHAMPIONSHIPS somthing nash might NEVER win...LAKERS baby
